Specialty Certifications Offered by NBCC

National Certified School Counselor (NCSC)
Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor (CCMHC)
Master Addictions Counselor (MAC)

NBCC offers three specialty certifications for National Certified Counselors (NCCs). The specialty applications represent recognition of specialized training and experience in a particular area of professional counseling. In addition, all three require an examination designed for counselors working in that particular area. All three require the National Certified Counselor (NCC) certification as a prerequisite or corequisite.

Why would NCCs want to apply for an additional certification and take another exam?

  • The NCSC certification for public school counselors is honored by six states for as much as $6,000 of salary supplementation.
  • The MAC certification is honored by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) as qualifying for the Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) training and certification for addictions counselors wishing to qualify to do evaluations on federally regulated employees such as truck drivers and airline pilots.
  • The CCMHC is honored by TRICARE for third-party reimbursements. TRICARE is the insurance for government and military employees and families.
