NBCC has begun the process of conducting the next job analysis for the counseling profession, and we need your input!

We are seeking individuals to participate in various in-person and virtual focus groups. Our goal is to have representation of counselors doing a variety of work across the United States and its territories. Participants will share their perspectives on the counseling profession and provide feedback on what it looks like to be a counselor today.

Two focus groups have already been completed. Dr. Christian Chan, an assistant professor in the Counseling and Educational Development Department at UNC Greensboro, attended the first focus group and found the experience invaluable.

“Attending a job analysis focus group is an opportunity for advocacy and to connect with other like-minded professionals and leaders in the counseling profession. It’s one step of many in creating what we, as counselors, deem as credible,” says Dr. Chan.

The information collected at these focus groups will be used toward the creation of a job analysis survey, which will help gather comprehensive, detailed information about the day-to-day work of counselors. These data are used to support the profession of counseling and also inform examination content. Our goal is to release the job analysis survey in 2025 for data collection.

“This is a great opportunity to be a crucial part of updating counseling practices and policies to stay current, particularly within the United States,” continues Dr. Chan.

Upcoming focus group opportunities include:

  • Northeastern Illinois University
    • Friday, Nov. 1, 2024, 10am-2pm CDT (lunch will be provided)
  • New Jersey City University
    • Friday, Nov. 8, 2024, 10 am–2 pm EST (lunch will be provided)

Please note that while food is provided during these meetings, travel and lodging will not be covered.

Join us in an open dialogue about the counseling profession to ensure continued safeguarding of counseling standards and practices. Register for a focus group here and help support the future of the counseling profession.

“After the completion of the focus groups and creation of the job analysis survey, I’m excited to see their long-term impacts,” says Dr. Chan.

Limited spots are available! Register today!
