Recognizing TPC Editor Dr. Amie A. Manis

In late 2019, The Professional Counselor (TPC), NBCC’s peer-reviewed academic journal, said farewell to its founding editor, J. Scott Hinkle, who had guided the growth of the publication since 2011. Over the course of the transition, NBCC and TPC leadership identified a strong scholar and conscientious, thoughtful reviewer, Amie A. Manis, PhD, NCC, ACS, BC-TMH, LPC, to step in as interim editor. That decision turned out to be the best one we could possibly have made.

After publishing in TPC in 2012, Dr. Manis joined the TPC Editorial Review Board in 2013 and served as a peer reviewer until being called to the helm at the end of 2019. Over the years, her insightful and constructive reviews have supported many authors as they work to become better researchers and scholars. When she became TPC’s editor, Dr. Manis brought many innovative ideas to strengthen that community of support for scholars and enhance the review process of the journal. Since 2020, Dr. Manis has led an incredible effort to reorganize the editorial staff and boards of TPC, streamline the review and publication processes, and set TPC on a strong trajectory for the future.

Later this summer, Dr. Manis will hand the reins to a new TPC editor. While we look forward to welcoming the new editor and introducing this dynamic leader in next month’s Visions, this month, we want to express our deep and abiding gratitude to Dr. Manis. She has been a vibrant and hardworking leader for the journal.

“Working with her has been an exciting adventure—and that’s even without taking a global pandemic and cultural awakenings into account!” says Director of Professional Resources and TPC Managing Editor Catherine Clifton. “I have grown both personally and professionally through our relationship, and I am thankful for the opportunity to learn beside her. Dr. Manis is always willing to consider new ideas and ask the hard questions, and her excitement is infectious. Her level of passion for providing relevant, high-quality literature and pushing the counseling profession forward is something we can all aspire to—I certainly do.”

In her welcome interview published in Visions in 2020, Dr. Manis put forth her view of what it means to work with researchers, practitioners, and scholars who are submitting their work for publication: “For me, it represents the depth of shared commitment to advancing knowledge and practice, to raising visibility of best practices and innovative ideas, and to advancing the professionalization of counseling and social justice. This matters now more than ever before in my lifetime.”

We are all sorry to see Dr. Manis depart from this role, and we are lucky to have had the opportunity to be part of her academic and scholarly journey. Our journal is better because of her leadership, and we look forward to ongoing collaboration with her in the future.

All of us at NBCC and TPC will be eternally grateful for Dr. Manis’s dedication to those pursuits, and we hope to continue her work for many years to come.
