Michael Brooks is a Professor of Counselor Education at North Carolina A&T State University (NCAT) in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Dr. Brooks holds the distinction of leading the only HBCU Counselor Education doctoral program that is CACREP-accredited, and the outstanding graduates of his program are transforming communities across the United States. Dr. Brooks is dedicated to advancing professional opportunities for graduates of HBCUs, and his mentorship of exemplary doctoral students and support for their launch into academic and administrative positions is strengthening the network of mental health resources and advancing equitable access to vitally important mental health care.

Dr. Brooks received a BA in psychology from Morehouse College and his MA and Ph.D. in counselor education and supervision from the University of Central Florida. His research and scholarship focus on Black male success factors, counselor education pedagogy, ex-offender recidivism, and vocational rehabilitation. In Dr. Brooks’s more than 20-year career in higher education, he has had 50+ peer-reviewed publications and been awarded 5 million dollars in grant funding. Dr. Brooks’s teaching and research are informed by his professional service in government mental health services settings, substance abuse counseling, and employee assistance programs. His community engagement reflects his commitment to advocacy through action, shaping policy, and supporting the communities he serves.

The professional counseling community has recognized and celebrated Dr. Brooks’s achievements and professional impact. He was honored with a 2023 American Counseling Association (ACA) Presidential Citation and a 2023 Outstanding Teaching Award from the Southern Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (SACES). Dr. Brooks was selected as an ACA Fellow and previously served as a North Carolina Board of Licensed Professional Counselors member.

Dr. Brooks is inspired daily by his wife, who shares his commitment to propelling healthy communities forward and lives that commitment through her work as a physician, and his daughters, in whom he sees the possibility of a better, more robust, more just, and vibrant world.
