NBCC is currently seeking qualified counselors to serve on our Examination Sensitivity and Bias Review (ESBR) Committee. These subject matter experts (SMEs) help ensure our counselor certification and licensing examinations remain fair and balanced, represent the diversity of counselors and clients, and are protected from bias.

Members of the ESBR Committee consider the impact of culture and context on assessment content and provide recommendations to the NBCC Assessments Department to ensure that examinations offer all candidates an equal opportunity for success.

Eligible applicants must:

• hold a minimum of a master’s degree from a CACREP-accredited program or a counseling program in an institutionally accredited college or university. A doctoral degree is preferred.
• be in good standing with their respective credentials and licenses and licensed as a professional counselor, a professional counselor associate, or a clinical mental health counselor for 2 or more years.
• have expertise in cultural fairness and representation in standardized testing.
• have at least 3 years of professional experience.

NBCC encourages applicants who represent the complexity and diversity of the counseling profession.

Additionally, committee members cannot currently be involved in test preparation or required training for any NBCC and Affiliates examination. (This does not limit an individual from the teaching or facilitation of counselor education coursework—this point is limited to examination preparatory seminars, classes, etc.).

Members serve a term of 1 year with the possibility of renewal for additional terms. Attendance is expected at committee meetings of varying length, which are held approximately every quarter. These meetings typically occur virtually but may, on occasion, occur at the NBCC conference center, in Greensboro, North Carolina. If travel is required, NBCC will pay all expenses.

The committee is expected to set guidelines for item writers and examination reviewers to address bias at the item and form development stages. The committee reviews test items on an ongoing basis and makes recommendations, as appropriate, regarding examination processes to reduce potential method bias. Members must adhere to confidentiality and security compliance requirements.
